Kristen and Bryce Engagement Shoot

It's not often you can just hang out with a couple and they will just naturally show you who they are. With Kristen and Bryce it just kinda happens. I'm pretty confident I'll never see another couple exchange piggyback rides, as though it were an everyday thing (I'm kinda sure it is with them).

I had the pleasure of photographing Madison a few years ago when doing work with the National Charity League for their big charity fashion show. I was delighted to get the call to do her shoot for her senior event. We were going for just one image but managed to come up with a few options.

Cassandra wanted an engagement shoot with a country feel to it. I had no clue where to go for that but after some scouting and some phone calls we found the nice people at El Camino Ranch in Redlands Ca. They agreed to let us use their property for the shoot and Cassandra was thrilled with the location. We had a good time roaming the grounds, no one stepped in anything, and we got some great photos. Their Wedding is in 120 days! Congrats you two, looking forward to photographing your special day.

It's high time I get cought up on some blog posts. For example this wedding.... Is from last August! Though for the life of me it doesn't seem to have been that long ago. BTW you may recognize the Groom from a few very cool detective shows, it still trips me out when I catch sight of him on screen.

One of the most rewarding aspects of what I do is the people I get to meet along the way. You have to connect with the client or they will never connect with the final image. With Sarah and Jose we started our session as relative strangers and ended it with inside jokes (and a fantastic dinner). I can't wait for their wedding. The outtakes from this shoot were hillarious, and while Sarah probably wouldn't mind me posting images of her running from a creature coming out of the wall, her being "tied" to train tracks or the two of them planking other brides might not quite understand so I will save those for her to share on her own. :)

My good friend and lifesaving assistant asked if I would mind hitting the beach with her and her little sister to grab a few photos. With all she does for me the answer was an easy yes, we had no idea what we were going to do but we headed out and had a great time. I thought I'd share a few of the photos here:

Capture Art Photography is partnering with NARSAD to put on a one day only event to help raise awareness and money to fight schizophrenia and depression.

The following are facts that I wish I didn't know:

In memory of Jeff Messer

One in four adults – approximately 57.7 million Americans – suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder
At least one in 10 children has a serious mental or emotional disorder
Mental illness is the leading cause of disability in the United States among
people aged 15 to 44
Worldwide, suicide is among the three leading causes of death among people aged 15 to 44
Of those who die from suicide, more than 90 percent have a diagnosable mental disorder
Every 16 minutes someone in the United States commits suicide

These statistics became very real to our family this past year when we lost one of our own to this disease.

The Event!

Sunday November 21st from 12:30 - 5:30 we will be doing a afternoon long shoot to raise money to support NARSAD in their efforts to bring an end to these diseases. What does this mean for you? We are giving you the opportunity to have your family's portrait professionally taken just in time for the holidays.

For a minimum donation of $50, you will receive a mini portrait session for your family. Portraits will be taken on a white, seamless backdrop and we will have numerous holiday-related props available to help your family portrait reflect your unique personality and style. There will be nothing further to purchase!

After the shoot we will provide you with 2-3 finished images in digital format along with a photographer's release allowing you to have them printed in any fashion you wish!

Portrait

Which image is a portrait? Most people would look at these two images and choose the image of the model. Tradition may be on their side as many consider a portrait's key purpose to be capturing the subject's face and expression. In that case, the model gets the nod. But I’ve always felt it more important to capture the personality or if possible the character of the subject. In that case, the little girl’s image gets the nod. Unless, of course, the model’s personality consists purely of gazing intensely at people from tattered doorways, which may be possible. I didn’t take much time to get to know her. However, in the hour or so I spent with the little girl, it was clear to see that she loved to experience the world around her. She was full of life and abounding in expression so letting her hair fall across her face or even simply trying to capture what she was seeing still gives the viewer an idea of the personality and beauty behind the subject. Of course we got plenty of good images of her adorable little face, but we were more concerned with letting her be her than with directing an ad campaign.

The next time you hire a photographer talk to them up front about what you want. Do you want to capture a beautiful classic portrait? Do you want to capture your child’s personality and expression at an age you never want to forget them being? There is nothing wrong with going for both but open communication will help guide the shoot and improve the chances of everyone being happy with the outcome.

Capturing Moments with the Ellis Family

This afternoon we had the opportunity to shoot with the Ellis family. I promise to post more samples as soon as I get a chance to go through them. However, I came across this image and it immediately reminded me of two things. First, I LOVE shooting on location, and second Stu Maschwitz was dead on when he described a powerful image as the combination of fact, moment, and light. If you care to read the verbose explanation check it out here. In short, every image records a fact no matter how complex or dull. A better image records a fact that also contains good lighting. But the images that last or that make an impression record a fact, have wonderful light but also capture a moment. I had dozens of images of Char up on this old beam, each recording a fact and mostly all in good light but as I scanned through the moment in this image jumped out. The steady grip that Mommy has on her letting her know she is safe, and yet neither is ready to let it go. The breeze kicking up just a touch as their eyes meet seems to give life to a conversation that Char is too young to be able to have with words.
